Enrollment Policies

To register for undergraduate business courses, students who are pursuing a major, minor, or certificate through the David Eccles School of Business must follow the steps in the “Process to Add Courses” section below.

Non-business students (including exchange and non-matriculated students) must submit the Business Course Request Form to gain access to restricted business courses.

For additional information, students should consult the Office of the Registrar’s registration tutorials.

Students can enroll themselves via CIS if:

  1. They meet the course requisites*
  2. There are available seats in the course

*The University of Utah’s registration system cannot always recognize transfer courses as requisites. Therefore, transfer students may need to contact Undergraduate Advising Services for assistance.

Effective Dates

Fall 2018
Assigned registration date (check CIS) through Aug. 24

Spring 2019
Assigned registration date (check CIS) through Jan. 11

Use the Waitlist (Office of the Registrar)

Beginning Fall 2017, the University of Utah will utilize a wait list feature for some courses. This feature allows eligible students to add their names to an electronic wait list* if a course is full. For more information about this feature and its policies, please visit the Office of the Registrar’s FAQ page.

See which Eccles School courses DO NOT have the wait list feature
  • If the feature is available:
    • Students should visit the Office of the Registrar’s FAQ page for instructions on adding themselves to the wait list. If they are not enrolled in the course by the last day to add without a permission code, they must proceed to the next step and attempt to enroll via the “Golden Ticket” add code process. (Being on a wait list does not guarantee the receipt of a “Golden Ticket.”
  • If the feature is not available:
    • The Eccles School does not issue permission codes or maintain wait lists for full courses. Therefore, students should check the course’s enrollment cap every day. If a seat becomes available and they are eligible to enroll, they can register via CIS.

*The University of Utah’s registration system cannot always recognize transfer courses as requisites. Therefore, transfer students may not be able to be on a wait list. Students with questions should contact their academic advisor.

Effective Dates

Fall 2018
Assigned registration date (check CIS) through Aug. 24

Spring 2019
Assigned registration date (check CIS) through Jan. 11

Use a “Golden Ticket” (Eccles School)

Students can no longer enroll on their own, and the University of Utah’s wait list is no longer in effect. To request enrollment in a course, students need the instructor’s permission in the form of a “Golden Ticket.”

  • The instructor (at their discretion) gives the student a “Golden Ticket.” The student brings the ticket to the table in the SFEBB lobby.
    • Online Classes ONLY: Students seeking to be added to an online course should visit Eccles.Link/Golden-Ticket to request an electronic Golden Ticket.
  • If the student meets the course requisites and there is an available seat in the course, Undergraduate Advising Services enrolls them immediately.
  • If the student meets the course requisites but there are no available seats in the course, Undergraduate Advising Services adds the student to the standby list. Being on the standby list does not guarantee enrollment, but if a seat becomes available before the deadline, Undergraduate Advising Services will enroll the student and notify them via UMail.

The Eccles School’s “Golden Ticket” Policies

  • Students must meet the course requisites.
  • Undergraduate Advising Services will not add students to full courses.
  • The Office of the Registrar’s wait list feature is different from the Eccles School’s “Golden Ticket” add code process. Students who are not able to register after being on a wait list must go through the Eccles School’s “Golden Ticket” add code process in its entirety. Being on a course’s wait list does not guarantee the receipt of a “Golden Ticket.”
