Complete Lower Division Core

The first step for students at the David Eccles School of Business is to complete the Lower Division Business Core.

Advanced Placement (AP) or transfer credit may cover some of these requirements. For more information, consult the Transfer Equivalency Guide and meet with your academic advisor.

Submit Application for Upper Division

After you complete the Lower Division Business Core, the next step is to apply to Upper Division. After youā€™ve been accepted, youā€™ll complete the Upper Division Business Core and be ready to declare a major!

There are different paths to admission.

Complete Upper Division Core

Complete Upper Division Business Core courses and begin considering which specialized business major youā€™d like to pursue.

Declare a Major

Once you’ve completed Upper Division Core courses and any major-specific prerequisites, you can apply to a major. Admission to each business major requires an additional application. Find more information on each undergraduate major program webpage.

There are different paths to admission to Upper Division at the Eccles School:

Business Scholar Experience (BSE) Good Standing
  • Complete all required Lower Division classes with a C- or above
  • Maintain a 2.7 University of Utah and 2.7 Business GPA
  • Admitted to Upper Division and guaranteed completion in Business Administration if that is your desired major.

All other majors have additional admission criteria that students should review carefully. Explore here.

Business Scholars Experience (BSE) Committee Review
  • Complete all required Lower Division classes with a C- or above
  • Below a 2.7 University of Utah or 2.7 Business GPA
  • BSE Program holistically reviews the records and follows up with students. There is no guarantee of admission to the Upper Division.
Automatic Admission (Traditional)*
  • Complete all required Lower Division classes with a C- or above
  • Maintain a 3.0 Total GPA and Business GPA

*This admissions criteria also applies to students on the 2024-25 Hybrid Core Curriculum who completed partial BCOR coursework.

Committee Review (Traditional)*
  • Complete all required Lower Division classes with a C- or above
  • Application considered if you pass all Lower Division classes and are a 2.7 or above Total and Business GPA
  • There is no guarantee of admission to the Upper Division.

*This admissions criteria also applies to students on the 2024-25 Hybrid Core Curriculum who completed partial BCOR coursework.

Summer Lower Division Pre-Business Completion: If you complete lower-division business courses over the summer semester, you may be eligible for conditional admission to the Upper Division after the summer add-drop dateĀ to facilitate registration for Fall classes. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in their final 1-2 pre-business courses and have a Total GPA of 3.4+ and Business GPA of 3.4+. Admission to the Upper Division will be finalized after summer grades are reviewed. Please consult your academic advisor with any questions. Students who are conditionally admitted must meet certain grade and GPA requirements to maintain their admission.

Note: Applying does not guarantee admission. Requirements include: 1) complete final lower division business courses with C- or better and 2) maintain at least a 2.7 total and business GPA after summer grades post. A committee will review studentsā€™ full academic records and admit them on a case-by-case basis.
