Degree: Master of Healthcare Administration

As an international student from Fiji, my educational journey has been transformative, taking me from BYU–Hawaii to the University of Utah to pursue a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA). The move from Hawaii’s close-knit, Polynesian atmosphere to Salt Lake City’s fast-paced and diverse environment was a significant adjustment. I initially struggled with homesickness and adapting to the cultural differences, but I built a support system by joining cultural organizations and connecting with peers, which helped me feel a sense of belonging. Academically, transitioning to the rigorous MHA program was challenging, but my undergraduate studies in biology prepared me with the discipline and perseverance to succeed. A memorable milestone was presenting my first case analysis, which reaffirmed my confidence in pursuing this path. These experiences have taught me to embrace change, build bridges between cultures, and rely on my Fijian values of resilience, humility, and community to thrive in any environment.

A piece of advice that has helped me as an international student is to attend cultural and community events on campus and in the Salt Lake Valley. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn about different cultures, and feel connected to the local community. These events also provide opportunities to share your own culture, which can help you feel more at home and build meaningful relationships.
