Dozens of graduate and undergraduate students gathered Friday, Feb. 7 to present their analysis of social media activity during the Super Bowl.

With thousands of dollars in prize money and guaranteed internship interviews on the line, the competition was intense.  Three years ago, Chong Oh, associate professor and director of the Undergraduate Information Systems Department at the Eccles School, created the Game Day Analytics Challenge to allow students the chance to conduct an in-depth analysis of tweets related to Super Bowl advertising.

The Game Day Analytics challenge required student teams to present infographics and white papers based on data extracted from tweets during the 2020 Super Bowl commercials. Students applied business analytics skills and gained practical knowledge including data collection, data processing and cleaning, data analysis, and data visualization. Technology learned included PHP, MySQL, Python, Twitter API, and Domo.
