The Hey U podcast team got a deeper look into Paycom, the highest-ranking software company of 2019 by Forbes. Paycom is an HR tool company, creating an essential, cloud-based infrastructure for human capital that has been adopted by many businesses. This innovative software has transformed businesses by assisting them in talent acquisition and management, accurate and timely payroll, automation of core business processes, and more.

The team talked with Ryan Smith, Paycom’s Senior Collegiate Talent Acquisition Advisor. Smith gave valuable insight into how students can grow their sales skills, the importance of taking chances, and a great internship opportunity for students.

When it comes to growing your sales skills, Smith’s advice is to fully immerse yourself in developing the skills that will help you to be successful in sales. Take every opportunity to learn through the sales curriculum, role-play competitions, public speaking, and professionalism.

Smith believes that “Growth comes from putting yourself in situations where you are a little uncomfortable.” When nothing changes, nothing changes. We learn so much about ourselves when we try new things and put ourselves out there. Taking on different projects and connecting with new people is a great way to advance your career and learn crucial skills.

Another important part of business, especially in a rapidly growing company like Paycom, is communication. Smith says that his company has realized that, “We would rather over-communicate than under-communicate.” This is particularly key in sales, given the high-stress, high-expectation nature of the industry. Because there are so many moving parts involved, communication is crucial so that everyone has a good understanding of what is going on in the company.

If you are interested in growing your sales knowledge and skills, the Paycom Junior Executive Internship Program is a great pathway for students. This internship is aimed at finding the most influential, articulate, and goal-oriented individuals. Interns can work full-time and are given the opportunity to earn a permanent role at Paycom.
