By neglecting to negotiate her starting salary for her first job, a woman may sacrifice over half a million dollars in earnings by the end of her career. Yet, as research reveals, men are four times more likely to ask for higher pay than are women with the same qualifications.

Whether they want higher salaries, better career opportunities, or more help at home, women are much less likely than men to ask for what they want. They pay for this decision in every aspect of their lives—in lost income, delayed career advancement, and under-utilization of their skills at work. They also pay in strained relationships and health problems at home. These are losses women don’t need to suffer.

“I’m looking forward to discussing the importance of negotiating with women at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business,” Laschever said. “Failing to negotiate costs a woman too much over the course of her career. My talk and workshop will empower the women of Utah to ask for and get what they deserve.”

Alumni and students are invited to join the David Eccles School of Business Women’s Alumni event “Ask For It: Women and the Power of Negotiation” by Sara Laschever, noted author, speaker, and international authority on women and negotiating and practice negotiation strategies that have been shown to work best for women.

The Eccles School will host Laschever, noted author, speaker, and international authority on women and negotiating on Wednesday, Dec. 2. at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at the free event. To RSVP, click here.

Laschever will explore the internal and external barriers that can prevent women from asking for what they need and deserve—and show women how to overcome their socially imposed reluctance to negotiate. She will teach women how to recognize many more opportunities to negotiate, evaluate the economic value of their work, rehearse their negotiations beforehand, and employ negotiating strategies that have been shown to work especially well for women. Participants will discover that by mastering a few basic principles, planning carefully, and practicing, anyone can become an effective negotiator.

In addition to being introduced to “best practice” negotiation strategy, participants will also explore ways to maximize their bargaining power, learn how to set the right targets for their negotiations, and acquire techniques to manage the anxiety women often feel around this essential workplace skill.
