Opportunity Scholars recently had a chance to experience a leadership retreat at Zion Ponderosa Ranch. Reflecting the scholar’s journeys, both educational and through their personal lives, this year’s theme was “Rooted and Routed; We are here to stay.”

In addition to leadership workshops, students had the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities and bond with their peers. One day was dedicated to students getting to know their fellow scholars through icebreakers and programming, bringing a sense of belonging to the community.

“One of the best parts about the leadership retreat was the camaraderie built over such a short time together,” Andrew Ve’e, senior and staff member, expressed. “Being exposed to other staff and students who share similar struggles and goals is a confidence booster. It was great learning from them and getting to know them a bit outside of campus life.”

Students also enjoyed various outdoor activities such as horseback riding, Jeep tours, paintballing, canyoneering, skeet shooting, and hiking. Later that night, scholars and leaders came together for a final dinner, a fun talent show, and a bonfire with s’mores. There were great performances, eating, dancing, and listening to music.

On their last day at Zion Ponderosa, scholars met for closing remarks, where everyone got to express how they felt about the trip. Many students loved their experience and reported feeling closer as a community.

Overall, the leadership retreat “supports Opportunity Scholars’ mission to enhance and support the college experiences of first-generation business students through to graduation,” said Latu Kinikini, Director of Opportunity Scholars. “One student shared how the retreat made her understand the true meaning of Aloha leadership through the actions of her peers and staff. Not only did she feel so included and connected, but she was also inspired in many ways.”

The Eccles School is proud of our Opportunity Scholars and this fantastic program designed to support and enhance the educational experience of first-generation business students as they progress toward graduation. For more information, visit Eccles.link/opportunity-scholars.
