The Ivory Innovations Hack-a-House is returning for a second year, offering students a chance at $5,000 in prize money for innovations in housing policy, design, and finance.

Hack-a-House is a two-day competition fostering innovative ideas to solve Utah’s housing affordability problem as the Beehive State continues to grow. The competition brings together the leading local and national voices in housing design, policy, and finance in an open forum to engage with — and mentor — the next generation of housing affordability advocates. Participants will receive specific instructions and parameters on the day of the competition and can sign up individually or as a team.

Participation from recent graduates and surrounding universities is encouraged in addition to students from the University of Utah. Each group will have 24 hours to produce a proposal that reduces the median cost of housing by 10 percent or increases income by 10 percent. Judges will evaluate ideas according to innovation in housing finance, policy, and design and give away a total of $5,000 in prize money.
