The Information Systems major partnered with Domo and Layton Construction to host the IS-Domo Hackathon on Nov. 9-10. More than 80 students participated, consisting of 12 graduate and four undergraduate teams. Teams were given 24 hours to formalize a solution to a business problem presented by Domo and Layton Construction, using the Domo visualization and BI platform. They then presented their proposed solution to a panel of judges.

Students on the winning team from the graduate category were Stephen Sainsbury (MBA), Jacob Nelsen (MSIS/MBA), Rodrigo Perez (MSIS/MBA), and Kendra Jensen (MBA). The undergraduate winners were Ted Camper (IS), Eric Paxton (IS), Parker Edman (QAMO), and Rahma Hussein (QAMO).

All the competing students gained hands-on experience with the Domo platform. As a follow up, Domo provides certification and an internship as next steps for students interested in this career path. In turn, both Domo and Layton Construction gained wide coverage and brand visibility.

We owe many thanks to our sponsors, Domo and Layton Construction, with special thanks to Jared Cook, Senior Director of Education, Strategy, and Community at Domo; and Jeff Metcalf, Information Systems Director at Layton Construction. We also want to thank the judges from Domo (Jared Cook, Amy Cowin, Jeremy Morris), Layton Construction (Jeff Metcalf, Steve Hawkins, Austin Lay), and Eccles faculty (Wagner Damiani, Chong Oh).

This valuable partnership between Information Systems Program at Eccles and Domo has resulted in more than 228 student engagements (with Domo) via workshops, the Hackathon, and info sessions. We look forward to more future collaborations.
