We all know that for the past few years the country has been going on a crazy rollercoaster ride as far as employment and the job market is concerned. And although, we’re slowly climbing back up that rollercoaster hill and seeing some improvements, it’s still important for employees to focus on doing a great job to stay employed. So, whether you’re a marketing maven, a financial guru, or the best darn sales guy in the office, it’s a good idea to check out the tips below. Who knows, they might just help you keep your job!

  1. Have a good attitude! No one likes working with the office jerk. Put a smile on your face and stop complaining about TPS reports. Just get them done and don’t whine about it.
  2. Don’t be late…for anything.
  3. Be a team player. If your team and business network is working hard, you better make sure you’re working just as hard, if not harder.
  4. Prioritize your tasks each day so you know what needs to get done and when. This will help you stay on track and stay organized.
  5. Communicate. We’ve all been in that situation where we don’t know what stage a project is at because someone is holding up the communication line. Don’t do this. Keep the lines of communication open, so that people aren’t waiting for you.
  6. Be constructive not destructive. Unless someone directly asks for your opinion, don’t feel that you have to share it all of the time. And if you have been asked to share it, try to do so in a way that is constructive, rather than destructive.
  7. Become the go-to person or someone who is irreplaceable in your office. If that means being the only person who knows the special way to use the antiquated fax machine, you be that person.
  8. Avoid office romances, cliques, and gossip…enough said.
  9. Be flexible. Projects change. Workloads change. Needs at the office change. You need to be able to accommodate these changes, so go ahead and be less rigid and more flexible.
  10. We all learned this last tip in kindergarten, but it seems that we should have a refresher course in business careers, as well: Say please and thank you. You’ll be amazed at what these small, kind words can do for you and the morale of the office.

With these tips in mind, you won’t need to think about the employment rollercoaster any more. Get off the ride and just enjoy watching your career move upwards because not only will you keep your current job, you’ll most likely get promoted. Keep up the good work!
