Kashmir Hill, Forbes writer and blogger of “The Not-So Private Parts,”spoke to David Eccles School of Business students in the Profiles in Leadership class at the beginning of March. Hill focuses her writing on privacy issues in the digital age, and discussed the importance of being aware of what information is on the internet, how it’s being used, and a few steps towards protecting an individual’s privacy.

She advised students to be aware of how tangled social media can be in their personal and professional lives. Everything from pictures to posts can trip you up as you enter the job market and begin your career. Hill suggests keeping your work colleagues and professional contacts connected through Linkedin, while keeping your friends and family on Facebook. It’s difficult, but one step closer to achieving some control over what information is seen by whom.
