Finance majors Ethan Black and John Haraden tackle water usage at the U
Editor’s Note: The David Eccles School of Business is celebrating Earth Day (April 22) this week by sharing stories of Eccles student entrepreneurs and organizations that highlight sustainability.
As students in the Business Scholars Transfer Program, finance majors Ethan Black and John Haraden participated in the “Build a Better U” project. This project gives students the opportunity to identify, develop, and propose solutions to issues that will have a real impact on campus and in the community. Their team chose to tackle the issue of sustainability and water usage. Research showed that a single urinal, on average, uses more than 40,000 gallons of water each year. Their solution proposed converting current flush urinals on campus to waterless urinals.
Earlier this year, that proposal became reality when these urinals were installed at the Marriott Library. With this initial step complete, Haraden and Black continue to study the long-term feasibility of their project and broader installation. Learn more about this project on the Marriott Library blog.
