Graduate Certificate in Information Systems

The Graduate Certificate in Information Systems (GCIS) program allows students to gain specialized knowledge in information systems. Obtaining a graduate-level certificate in IS can provide an advantage to those seeking to advance their careers in the field of information systems or strengthen their technical proficiency.

This 18-credit-hour certificate program is designed for maximum flexibility and offers students a wide choice of courses and areas of concentration. Courses are available in the evenings and online to meet the needs of working professionals. Program electives and faculty are shared with the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program and provide the same high level of instruction and interaction.

  • The GCIS requires 18 credit hours.
  • Full-time students can complete the certificate in 2 semesters. Part-time students can finish in 3 or more semesters. All requirements must be completed within 3 years.
  • The GCIS does not have any required core courses. Students may take any graduate-level IS/OIS course at the Eccles School to meet the requirements.
  • Current graduate students, as well as students not currently in a degree program (non-matriculated), are eligible for the GCIS program.
  • For current graduate students, certificate credits can cross-count toward your graduate program requirements.
  • For non-matriculated students, up to 9 GCIS credits can transfer into the MSIS program, should you choose to pursue the full master’s degree.
  • Certificate students may start the program in Fall, Spring, or Summer semester.

Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Management

The Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Management (GCCM) program allows developing leaders in cybersecurity to design, implement, and operate a security program intended to reduce risk of compromise of an organization’s data. Students who obtain this certificate will be better equipped to aid in the design, operation and monitoring of security controls to protect corporate and consumer data in an age of ever-increasing aggression and sophistication on the part of adversaries.

This 15-credit hour certificate is structured to provide coursework in the foundations of cybersecurity leadership. Information technology is at the core of all industry, but data repositories are under constant attack by adversaries from around the globe. Courses are available in the evenings and online to meet the needs of working professionals. Program electives and faculty are shared with the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program, other Eccles School programs and the School of Computing, providing the same high level of instruction and interaction.

  • The GCCM requires 15 credit hours. All requirements must be completed within 3 years.
  • The GCCM has four core course requirements that equate to 12 credit hours:
    • IS 6570 Cybersecurity Management (3)
    • IS 6572 Secure Network Operations (3)
    • IS 6573 Vulnerability Management (3)
    • IS 6574 Cybersecurity Risk and Compliance (3)
  • Elective courses can be selected through a collaborative effort between the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program, other Eccles School programs and the School of Computing.

Graduate Certificate in Operations and Supply Chain Management

Obtaining a graduate-level certificate in Operations and Supply Chain Management allows students to gain specialized knowledge and provides an advantage to those seeking to advance their career or strengthen their proficiency in OSC management.

This 15-credit hour program teaches students how firms create and capture value. Students will learn how to maximize quality relative to expenses, optimize activities across that supply chain, and the importance of lowering production costs while managing process flows. The courses will explore strategic choices for different industries and operational objectives. Students will learn how to manage inventory effectively, utilize information systems with their supply chains, and gain real-world practice in presenting operational results to management and/or other operations personnel.

  • The GCOSC requires 15 credit hours. All requirements must be completed within 3 years.
  • The GCOSC has two required core courses:
    • OIS 6062 Operations Management (3)
    • OIS 6620 Supply Chain Management (3)
  • There are a number of elective options in the program, allowing students to go deeper into one or more topic areas.
  • Current graduate students, as well as students not currently in a degree program (non-matriculated), are eligible for the GCOSC program.
  • For current graduate students, certificate credits can cross-count toward graduate program requirements.
  • For non-matriculated students, up to 9 GCOSC credits can transfer into the MSIS program, should you choose to pursue the full master’s degree.
  • Certificate students may start the program Fall, Spring, or Summer semester.

Graduate Certificate Requirements

  • Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA (non-matriculated students) or a minimum 3.0 GPA in their current graduate program.
  • A GMAT/GRE score is not required for admission to a graduate certificate program.
  • There are no prerequisites for admission into the certificate program; however, some individual courses may have prerequisites.

Step 1: Apply for Non-Degree Seeking Admission

Applicants who are not current, matriculated University of Utah students will need to submit a non-matriculated (non-degree seeking) application for admission. (Note: the non-matriculated application is the same as the undergraduate application. Once the application is started, applicants can elect to apply for non-matriculated status).

Eligibility

To be eligible for non-matriculated admission, applicants must:

  • Have graduated from high school three or more years prior to the registration term or, be accepted into a University of Utah-sponsored certificate program. If you do not meet this requirement, additional information will be required to prove college-readiness and will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
  • For GED-holders, a minimum 550 composite score with no individual score below 500 is required.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or seeking asylum or refugee status. Students wishing to attend on a visa may be eligible for non-degree seeking status, however, will be granted admission for one term only.
    • International students requiring an F-1 visa are not eligible for non-matriculated admission.
    • Note that permanent residents and other international applicants must meet English-proficiency requirements.
  • Have a cumulative transfer GPA of 2.6 or higher. Students who have an associate of arts or an associate of science degree from a regionally accredited institution may be admitted with a 2.35 GPA or higher.
    • Please note that while the university requires a 2.6 GPA, the certificate requires a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • If you have previously attended The University of Utah as a degree-seeking student, then it is required that you have received a bachelor’s degree from any regionally accredited institution prior to attending as a non-degree seeking student.

Step 2: Apply for the Graduate Certificate

Once you’re admitted as a non-matriculated student, you can submit the Eccles School graduate certificate application.

The certificate application will ask applicants to:

  • Upload an unofficial copy of transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Provide a personal statement describing why you’re interested in this program as well as your educational and professional goals (2000 character limit)
  • Upload your professional resume
  • Provide verification of University of Utah student status (student ID number)

Non-matriculated students are required to apply for non-matriculation admission prior to applying to the certificate program. For students not currently enrolled in a graduate degree program, admission into the certificate program is contingent upon admission to the University as a non-matriculated student.

Application Requirements

The certificate application will ask applicants to:

  • Provide a personal statement describing why you’re interested in this program as well as your educational and professional goals (2000 character limit)
  • Upload transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Upload your professional resume
  • Provide verification of University of Utah student status (student ID number)
  • List current graduate program, start date, and anticipated graduation date

  • Students must apply to the certificate at least one semester prior to the semester in which they will graduate.
  • Certificate applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • Certificate students may start the program in Fall, Spring, or Summer semester.
  • Note: the University of Utah non-matriculated application may close at any time.

  • Access to individual career coaching is not available for non-matriculated students.
  • Financial aid is not available to non-matriculated students; however, private loans may be available.
  • A maximum of 15 credits may be retroactively applied toward the certificate program should students apply for the certificate after completing qualifying coursework.
  • MSIS capstone and select other classes are not available to certificate students.
  • Scholarships are currently not available for certificate students.
  • Grades, credits, and the certificate appear on an official university transcript.
  • A 3.0 cumulative GPA in certificate courses is required for successful completion of the certificate.
  • Students must apply for the certificate at least one semester prior to the semester in which they will graduate.
