The Eccles Edition – News from Advising

News from Advising
The Eccles School undergraduate advising team is working hard to assist students with adjusting to college life—both academically and personally. Here are just a few of the projects they have been working on.

NACADA Annual Conference 2024:

  • Tyler Key, Academic Advising Coordinator, was a presenter at the Annual NACADA conference in Pittsburgh on Oct. 30, 2024. His session was titled “Graduation Anxiety, Senioritis, and Burnout” and had over 50 participants! Miles Thacker, International Student Program Manager, presented virtually on Oct. 29, 2024. Miles’ session, which had 60 participants, was titled “Supporting International Students: The Practice of Cultural Sensitivity.”

Mandatory Advising Program (MAP):

  • To date, the Undergraduate Advising Services team has seen 907 first-year students across seven different MAP sessions (through Oct. 29, 2024). These sessions help students develop their spring semester class schedule and give an overview of other useful tools and resources that can assist with their adjustment to college life. All first-year students are required to attend a MAP session, making the program a big lift for the entire undergraduate advising team. The effort is spearheaded by Assistant Director Maddie Rossman, with additional logistical support from Associate Director Lauren Voorhees. There are several remaining sessions throughout November.

Undergraduate Advising Staff Shout Outs

  • Jessie Bowman, Academic Advisor, is volunteering for a campus-wide new advisor onboarding module that is in development.
  • Walter Prado, Academic Advisor, was highlighted in the Oct. 17 issue of Navigate newsletter as an “Exemplary User” of the platform.
  • Summer Shepherd, Academic Advisor, developed a landing page for the Entrepreneurship Certificate program. The page clearly outlines how to declare the certificate, and includes relevant curriculum information, along with how to request that the certificate appear on diplomas. Previously, the information was in multiple different locations, and this new page will be highly useful for students to have everything in one place.
