Tackle Finals with Confidence

As the semester winds down, the stress of finals starts to set in. Exams and projects often significantly determine final grades, making them crucial for many students. While the pressure can feel overwhelming at times, there are several ways to optimize your time and efforts to prepare effectively. Here are some tips to help you tackle finals with confidence.

1) Start with a Plan

The key to successful finals preparation is having a solid plan. Some students face back-to-back exams or even multiple tests on the same day, so organizing your schedule is crucial. Allocate specific study blocks for each subject in the days leading up to your exams — avoid the temptation to cram the night before. Instead, create a daily schedule that balances study sessions with breaks to prevent burnout. Be sure to review the syllabus and any exam guidelines to understand the material and format thoroughly. Knowing what to expect will help you focus your study efforts on the most critical topics.

2) Leverage Campus Resources

The University of Utah and the David Eccles School of Business offer a variety of resources to help students succeed, especially during finals season. Teaching assistants frequently host office hours and review sessions, providing valuable opportunities to clarify exam topics and gain additional insights. Students can also benefit from specialized support through the Business Tutoring Center and the Marriott Library Writing Center, which are excellent for addressing specific academic challenges. Collaborating with peers in study groups is another effective way to reinforce your understanding of the material, while professors are always a great resource for tackling difficult questions and concepts. Equally important is maintaining a healthy headspace. The Wellness Center provides wellness services through the University to manage stress and stay focused.

3) Incorporate AI Tools

Artificial Intelligence technology is another great resource. AI is a beneficial tool that can enhance our learning and be a more specific helper in our studying endeavors. At the University of Utah, all students have access to Microsoft Copilot, which can help with organization, research, and summarizing study material. The university has its own AI page where you can look at events and articles that can help better utilize AI. Another honorable mention is NotebookLM. Built with Gemini 1.5, NotebookLM can help us better understand material by turning notes into a verbal explanation, like a podcast!

4) Prioritize Sleep

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of sleep. While it may be tempting to pull all-nighters, research shows that adequate rest improves focus, memory retention, and overall performance. Balancing your study schedule with enough sleep will recharge both your body and mind, setting you up for success on exam day.
