“Success is not achieved alone,” Opportunity Scholars celebrate 2024 graduates
The Opportunity Scholars Program recently celebrated one of its largest graduating classes, with 67 scholars, at their annual Spring Semester Luau. Each student was presented with a stole, certificate, and ribbon lei to celebrate their determination to earn a degree.
“Our scholars are not only first-generation college students but also trailblazers within their families, paving the way for future generations to pursue higher education,” said Associate Director Latu Kinkini. “This year, our program witnessed numerous significant milestones. Tonight holds profound significance as we commemorate our largest graduating class yet, with 67 scholars — a staggering 37% of our community — embarking on new chapters in their lives.”
Fifteen students were invited to share their inspiring stories of perseverance while navigating through college as first-generation students. Each student shared a unique journey, each echoing themes of resilience and the importance of finding your community and support system.
Graduating student Julina Tusieseina captured these themes with just a few succinct words: “Success is not achieved alone.” Each graduate, supported by mentors, peers, and families, have overcome challenges with unwavering resolve, embodying the ethos of the program.
“I am so thankful for Opportunity Scholars. With all the trials and obstacles I faced at the Eccles School, Opportunity Scholars was able to provide equitable resources to enhance my student experience,” said graduating senior Masi Taufahema. “I found a respected community and enhanced my leadership through the events and interactions provided by Opportunity Scholars. It is my wish that every student can find the sense of belonging that I found here in this program.”
The night ended with remarks from David Cumming, Chairman of the Cumming Foundation, one of the program’s esteemed donors. Students, families, donors, and supporters were all then invited to take part in a huge Hawaiian feast from Mina’s Kitchen.
The goal of the Opportunity Scholars Program at the Eccles School is to support and enhance the educational experience of first-generation business students as they progress toward graduation. For more information, visit Eccles.Link/opportunity-scholars.
