Earlier this month, the Opportunity Scholars Program at the David Eccles School of Business honored their Fall 2023 graduates with a Luau celebration. This much-anticipated event each semester brings together students, friends, families, and donors to recognize the incredible accomplishments of graduates. After receiving a certificate, graduation stole, and gift (a Cotopaxi bag), students spoke of their journey and gratitude to all those who supported them.

Then, the party began! While dining on food from Moki’s, attendees watched a fantastic Malialole show featuring traditional dance from the Pacific Islands, followed by a song of gratitude from Marshallese students Michael Kemem, Benita Anmontha, Kristy Mera, and Emily Triminio. The evening ended with a special tau’olunga by graduate Brittny Lolohea.

“The Luau meant so much to me because I was able to celebrate a huge accomplishment with family,” said Brittny. I had the opportunity to share my student story in hopes of inspiring others to find what motivates them to continue their education! As the daughter of an immigrant, non-traditional student, and single mother, I can’t tell you how important it was to me to be celebrated and to honor those who contributed to my success as a student.”

“The Opportunity Scholars graduation and Luau celebration is one that our graduates, their families, our students, and donors look forward to every year,” remarked Nate Webster, West Valley City Economic Retention Manager, OS Advisory Board Chair. “Our graduate’s Mana, Aloha Leadership/Mentorship, and achievement are recognized. They share their story, journey, and vision of their future with all in attendance.”

Webster continued, “The Luau is a moment where we commemorate accomplishments and victory through music, song, dance, and food. These two pieces of the celebration exemplify what we call Ohana. Ohana means we are a family regardless of blood relation, culture, or background. We are bound together, have influence, and are responsible for each other. This celebration showcases our families’ success!”

Congratulations to our Fall 2023 Opportunity Scholars graduates!
