Eccles School professor Jay Barney has been selected to receive the 2020 John Fayerweather Eminent Scholar Award from the Fellows of the Academy of International Business, to be presented this July at the AIB annual conference in Miami.

This is the most important award given by the AIB and is selected by a committee of Fellows. The award is unique, honoring scholars from outside the field of International Business whose work has had an important impact on the research and development of knowledge in the IB field — and is likely to continue to do so in the future.

The award has been given for more than 30 years to prominent scholars in adjacent fields such as economics, sociology, and organizational theory, among others. Previous recipients are well-known and highly respected scholars in their fields, but who also demonstrate impact and visibility beyond those fields.

“Jay is the consummate theoretician whose work has had a major impact in multiple disciplines. The number of citations to his published research is among the highest of top scholars across several sister disciplines, even more than some Nobel prize recipients,” said Michael Hitt, chair of the 2020 Eminent Scholar Award selection committee. “His work on the importance and value of resources for gaining and sustaining a competitive advantage has special relevance for the conduct of international business. As such, his work has served as a base for and catalyst to a significant amount of international business research.”

Congratulations, Jay!
