This year’s fall break experience with Eccles Global to Chile and Peru provided students an unparalleled experience, immersing them in the evolving business culture of Latin America, with a special focus on sustainability and innovation. Here’s a recap of the key moments that made the journey memorable.

A Business and Cultural Introduction in Chile

The experience kicked off in Santiago, Chile, where students had their first academic visit at Finis Terrae University. There, they were introduced to topics like marketing and economics and learned from the experiences of a startup, which gave them some insight into Chile’s fast-paced entrepreneurial landscape.

While touring the campus, students observed how practical, hands-on methods are used to teach medicine, emphasizing. preparation for direct patient care. In a group discussion, students engaged in problem-solving exercises that challenged them to brainstorm creative solutions to local sustainability challenges, thereby expanding students’ perspectives on Chile’s environmental values.

One of the trip’s standout visits was to the Latin American headquarters of Enel, one of the world’s largest power companies. Students hadthe unique opportunity to understand the inner workings ofa multibillion-dollar business, covering essential aspects such as human resources, hiring processes, and employee well-being. A key highlight was learning about circular cities and how Chile is leading the way with electric mobility.

Chile boasts the largest electric bus fleet in the world outside of China. Students witnessed this first-hand by visiting a mass transportation charging station capable of charging over 200 buses simultaneously. They even took a ride on one of theseelectric buses through the streets of Santiago, gaining practical insight into Chile’s green transportation initiatives.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Startup Chile

The visit to Startup Chile, one of the oldest government-sponsored accelerators globally, offered students a deep dive into entrepreneurship in Latin America. They learned about the different programs for startups, which provide equity-free grants, visas, and local support to budding companies. Impressively, 50% of the startups in each batch are female founded, reflecting Chile’s commitment to inclusive growth in entrepreneurship.

From the Andes to Machu Picchu: Exploring Peru

After a week of immersive learning in Chile, the group headed to Peru. A series of close calls with their flight — almost canceled twice — added to the excitement. After hourson the runway, the green light was given, and the journey continued.

Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by the team from Inca Trek, a company founded by a participant in the Masters of Business Creation program. The dedication of the Inca Trek team ensured a smooth arrival, despite the challenges.

The next day began before dawn. At 4 a.m., the group embarked on a much-anticipated trek to Machu Picchu. After a series of trains, buses, and waiting in lines, the group arrived at the awe-inspiring ancient site, tired but exhilarated. Led by local tour guides, students explored the rich traditions, customs, and history of the Incas. The breathtaking views and cultural significance of Machu Picchu left an indelible mark on everyone.

Weaving Traditions in the Sacred Valley

On the last day in Cusco, the group had the chance to visit Chinchero, a town at the heart of the Sacred Valley, thanks to Inca Trek’s founder, Alberto. Chinchero is known as the weaving center of Peru, where traditional methods of creating textiles have been preserved for centuries. Students participated in a workshop led by a local cooperative member who walked them through the processes of washing, drying, and spinning wool to create intricate clothing. The experience highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions while supporting local economies.
