Ready to embrace your inner explorer? You are in the right place! Utah is known for its beautiful trails, and many are just a short trip from campus. Hiking is a great way to explore the Salt Lake Valley, especially if you are new to the state. Here are three to check out:

Ensign Peak

Located at the north end of Salt Lake City, Ensign Peak is an easy 1.8 mile trek with a slight incline. With the trailhead placed in the residential area above the Utah Capitol Building, there’s easy parking near the beginning of the trail. This hike offers an excellent view of the city. There is also a shorter, lower path called Vista Mound if you want an easier stroll. More info at Ensign Peak Hike.

Bonneville Shoreline Trail

Stretching for 13.5 miles, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail takes you from Salt Lake City to Parley’s Canyon. Visitors can hike, bike, bird watch, study nature, and much more. You can enter via three trailheads right above the University of Utah – Red Butte Creek Road Trailhead, Dry Creek Trailhead, and UMNH Trailhead. All are within a Trax ride, a short bus ride, or a walk from different locations on campus. More info at Bonneville Shoreline Trail.

Neff’s Canyon

Grab your friends (and dogs), and check out Neff’s Canyon. This trail (3.5 miles each way) quickly gains altitude as you head up the dirt path. Along the way, you can stop and enjoy a stream, which is especially nice if hiking on a hot day this summer. Once you reach the top, take in the breathtaking view and take advantage of a great photo op! More info at Neff’s Canyon Trail.
