Editor’s Note:  David Eccles School of Business Ambassador Michelle Van Bui gives advice on How to Dress to Impress from her own experiences. This series is called Fashion and Business. Marketing + Communications Intern Dylan Conklin will next address men’s fashion don’ts in business.

Michelle BuiDress to impress has never been a truer statement. Once you enter the professional world, fashion knowledge will become one of your greatest tools. Many view the right clothing as a great indicator for professionalism. While this may not seem fair, it is true in many industries? Where are the lines drawn for what is considered acceptable and not in the business world. Here are 5 fashion DON’Ts if you want to impress!

  1. Too Much Skin. Avoid low cut and revealing shirts in the workplace. In other words, put the ladies away! Short skirts are also not a good idea, and not practical either. Inappropriate clothing is just simply not professional. Believe it or not, you can still look good while being appropriate!
  2. Stiletto Heels. First off, ouch. Second, OUCH. Sure stilettos are cute and can magically make your legs seem like they can stretch for miles, but 8+ hours on a weekday, no thanks! Closed toed shoes with a little heel is much more comfortable and reasonable.
  3. No ‘Arm Candy”. Excessive jewelry is extremely distracting. Keep bracelets, necklaces, and rings to a minimum around the office. Stick to your favorites and get rid of the excess. Less is more!
  4. Mismatched Belt and Shoes. Typically, business professional requires matching your belt to your shoes. For example, black shoes, black belt. The outfit will look more put together. Who doesn’t love a coordinated outfit?
  5. No Holey Jeans! If business professional is not required, stick to dress pants or skirts. If you absolutely do not have those items, go with dark denim with no holes. Nothing looks less professional than distressed jeans.

Remember, dressing yourself well is a way of life. So dress well!
