3 professional social media tips from Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid signed with IMG models in 2013 and by 2014 she made models.com’s list of the top 50 models in the world. Quoting the profound Derrick Zoolander, “being ridiculously good looking” obviously aided in this endeavor, but what was Gigi able to do on her own to secure this precious title? The answer: social media.
Social media has developed into a very powerful platform. Whether it is used for advertising, political lobbying, or simply showing off that you were indeed at that super underground concert, it is an effective way to communicate something to many people for typically very little cost. Many companies, charities, and celebrities use social media to effectively market themselves and create an image that they think embodies their company or personal values.
What are some tips we can garner from Hadid when it comes to using social media in a positive way?
- Be PC: Political correctness: everyone’s favorite topic. As an international model, Hadid will work with many different people and cultures. She needs to make sure that she is staying in the clear with as many people as possible. If she was to make a statement that offended a certain group of people, it is unlikely that someone from that offended collection would hire her. When it comes to companies, they must try and stay PC when using social media to make sure that they do not alienate a certain consumer base. Although some may argue that people are becoming more easily offended- it doesn’t really matter. Regardless of whether or not the current generation is more sensitive to certain subject areas, they are still consumers and offending potential customers is never a good idea.
- Show what you want to be known: I would be crazy if I thought Gigi Hadid had never been to a party intoxicated, however, do I think that she’s a raging party girl? Definitely not. Could she actually be? It’s completely possible. The point is: she doesn’t let her followers know. Everyone who looks at your social media is a person who can have an affect on your life: your future employer, coworker, even significant other. Make sure that you portray yourself in the way you want others to think of you. The safe bet: keep it clean.
- Keep up-to-date: Now, Gigi is only 21 and therefore shouldn’t have too hard of a time staying on top of the trends; however, others must focus on it. MySpace is no longer an affective way to reach a wide consumer base. Additionally, the language being used is very important. We all know that adult that tries to be “hip” and fit in with the “youth.” Once again, it comes down to reaching as many consumers as possible. Using business language that is timeless and appeals to the greatest amount of people is usually the best option. Looking at Gigi’s social media, it is clear to see that she using very general and basic language that keeps her safe when it comes to accessing a large consumer base.
Following these simple guidelines will help to make sure that your social media is projecting you in the best light possible. Although sometimes it is tempting to break these rules, that won’t help you land a spot on the list of the world’s top 50 models.]
