Students in the First Ascent Scholars program gathered earlier this month for their annual family BBQ. This event allows scholars, families, and mentors to reconnect and celebrate the start of a new year. This year’s event was held outside on the GARFF patio and featured southern barbeque, lawn and table games, and great conversation.

“I enjoyed sitting with my friends and eating dinner with them since I don’t get to do it that often,” said first-year student, Nyayeek Deng. “Overall, it was a great experience!”

The evening was especially poignant for mentors who were able to meet their mentees in person.

The First Ascent Scholars Program cultivates, encourages, and enables academically focused students with significant financial need to attend the Eccles School and connect with the University of Utah, local, and global community while reaching their full academic potential.
