Fall Bucket List for College
Fall at the University of Utah brings a perfect mix of tradition, adventure, and crisp mountain air. It’s the season of football weekends, spooky nights, and scenic walks through the trees. With so much happening on and off campus, now’s the time to balance your busy schedule with a little seasonal fun. Here are the best ways to enjoy everything fall in Utah has to offer.
1. Go on a Scenic Hike or Drive
October is prime time for scenic views. Find a trail, park, or drive known for vibrant fall foliage and enjoy the colors before they fade. The Alpine Loop is known for its beautiful autumn views. Hiking is also a great fall activity, with lots of trails close to campus! Hikes like the Living Room Trail, Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Donut Falls are great options for a fall foliage hike.
2. Go on a Coffee Run
Whether it’s hot chocolate, coffee, or cider, coffee shops in Salt Lake are the perfect way to warm up in the autumn cold. Try Publik Coffee Roasters, located just south of campus, for a maple latte and a quiet spot to study. Over in the 9th & 9th district, The Coffee Garden serves up strong brews and a comfy vibe. If you want a peaceful hideaway with mountain views, head to Two Creek Coffee House in Research Park for a cinnamon chai and a study break away from the bustle. Don’t want to stray from campus? Get a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks in the Campus Store or Marriott Library.
3. Show Your U Spirit!
There’s nothing quite like football season at the U. As the leaves turn red, the energy across the University of Utah campus amps up. Whether you’re a die-hard fan in the MUSS or just here for the tailgate snacks and team spirit, game days are a fall tradition you don’t want to miss. From the third-down jump to post-game celebrations, make the most of every home game this season.
4. Visit a Pumpkin Patch
Nothing says fall like a trip to a pumpkin patch. Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect carving pumpkin, looking to stock up on gourds for your dorm or apartment, or just want a wholesome break from campus life, Utah has some great options just a short drive away:
- Evans Family Farm in Lehi is renowned for its charming, small-town atmosphere and offers a delightful, fun, and affordable pumpkin-picking experience.
- Cornbelly’s, also located in Lehi, has more than just pumpkins. With corn mazes, games, food trucks, and nighttime events, Cornbelly’s is always a memorable experience.
- Wilkerson Farm in Orem combines tradition with fun, featuring a pumpkin patch, carnival rides, and an old-school market.
5. Explore Haunted Houses
Fall is the perfect season for a scare. If you’re looking to add some Halloween fun to your autumn, Salt Lake City has plenty of haunted attractions worth checking out. Fear Factory, located in a historic industrial site complete with towering sets and eerie effects, is the perfect atmosphere for a good scare. Nightmare on 13th is another local favorite, known for its ever-changing haunted themes and just a short drive from campus!
6. Alternative Fall Break
Looking for a meaningful way to spend fall break? The Bennion Center’s Alternative Breaks program lets U students travel, serve, and learn through week-long service trips focused on social and environmental issues.
