Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy

The mission of the Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business is to create and disseminate business knowledge. We prepare students for careers focused on bringing new ideas into the world — whether that’s a new business, a nonprofit, or a venture within an existing organization. Our students focus on creating value at its earliest stages, where ambiguity is highest and an integrated perspective on all dimensions of the venture is essential. Our teaching approach emphasizes skill development through traditional education complemented by deeply integrated experiential learning. Beyond the classroom, the department collaborates with institutes, centers, and initiatives to provide students with richer opportunities to leave the University of Utah prepared for the next step in their journey.

Program Options (Major or Minor)

The undergraduate program is built upon two pillars: an intensive in-person cohort experience for those who want it and flexible online offerings for those who need that availability.

Builders Track

The Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy’s Builders Track is a two-semester, 12-credit-hour, immersive program for students committed to building their entrepreneurial capacity through real projects. These courses are only taught in-person during the fall and spring semesters as a cohort-based experience. Our expectation is that students will commit a significant amount of time toward bringing their ideas to life. The program combines multiple entrepreneurship courses into a single studio-style experience in which students pursue venture creation, business design, and personal growth in an in-person cohort setting. Participants will either test ideas through structured startup challenges or advance existing ventures with faculty and mentor support. The focus is not on startup success alone, but on the development of entrepreneurial behavior: resourcefulness, clarity, resilience, and the ability to move forward. These courses replace traditional instruction with rigorous feedback loops, peer engagement, milestone tracking, and a commitment to execution. Students can take the Builders Track as part of a major or minor in entrepreneurship

Flexible & Online

For students who need more flexibility, we also offer our entrepreneurship degrees primarily online. The department is committed to prioritizing online sections of the classes needed to fulfill both the major and minor requirements. All classes for the minor have an online component, and most or all classes for the major are available online.

Graduate Programs

Master of Business Creation
Master of Business Creation
The Master of Business Creation (MBC) is an accredited, one-year degree program for serious entrepreneurs committed to growing their startup company. It features one-on-one mentorship, innovative and practical curriculum, and rich resources to support entrepreneurs. It provides courses, workshops, and labs designed for aspiring entrepreneurs building and scaling their business, which they bring into the program. Founders living in the U.S. can enroll in one of two formats – an in-person, full-time, two-semester option or an online, flexible, three-semester option. Founders living outside the U.S. in select locations can enroll in the online option.
