Solving Big Problems with Big Data: Domo-Layton Construction Hackathon Recap

For the past seven years, the David Eccles School of Business has been the proud host of the Domo/Layton Construction Hackathon, an annual competition where data meets innovation. On Nov. 16 and 17, this 48-hour hackathon brought together 90 students across 36 teams for an unforgettable challenge to uncover actionable insights using the Domo Business Intelligence (BI) platform.

In this year’s hackathon, teams were tasked to tackle a pressing real-world problem: improving safety outcomes for construction workers. Participants used the Domo Business Intelligence (BI) platform to analyze Layton Construction’s data and answer two key questions:

1. Does completing a safety checklist influence safety outcomes for construction workers?
2. Are there other correlations related to safety incidents present in the data?

With only two days and a team of 2-3 people, students were challenged to transform raw data into an interactive dashboard of visualizations and insights. Teams worked tirelessly to extract, transform, and load hundreds of thousands of data points, identifying six key performance indicators (KPIs), including weather, job size, and hours worked, to better understand the factors influencing safety outcomes. Time management, teamwork, and analytical creativity were essential to delivering impactful results.

Throughout the event, students leaned on each other and the mentors available through Zoom help sessions, asking necessary questions that shaped their approach. These moments of guidance were pivotal, helping teams navigate complex analyses and refine their dashboards.

As the competition ended, teams presented their interactive dashboards to a panel of judges, sharing unique insights and recommendations for Layton Construction’s mission of improving worker safety. The results? Innovative solutions, actionable insights, and a demonstration of what’s possible when data meets determination.

The Domo Hackathon is more than an exercise in technical skills — it’s an opportunity for students to grow, collaborate, and tackle real-world challenges. Students leave with more than just dashboards; they gain critical problem-solving, analytical, and presentation skills that will set them apart in the workforce.

The 2024 Domo/Layton Hackathon reminds us once again the power of data to drive meaningful change. From the creativity of the dashboards to the actionable insights presented, the event showcased the incredible talent and innovation of Eccles students.
