Imagine a place where the brightest minds converge for 48 hours, fueled by creativity, caffeine, and a drive to innovate. This is not a scene from the latest tech thriller but the reality at the David Eccles School of Business during our annual Domo-Layton Hackathon from 11/9-11/11/2023.

The Information Systems Program at the David Eccles School of Business has long been a melting pot of innovation and real-world problem-solving. Through our enduring partnerships with DOMO and Layton Construction, we’ve bridged the gap between academia and industry, providing our students with unparalleled opportunities to shine in the data world.

This year’s Hackathon posed a particularly pressing business problem from the construction industry, a challenge that resonates with our current economic and social dynamics. Utilizing the DOMO Business Intelligence platform, students were tasked to dissect, analyze, and rebuild, turning raw data into actionable strategies.

As the clock ticked, 6 teams of undergraduate and 11 teams of graduate students (total of 45 students) huddled around their screens, the hum of collaboration filling the air. The event was a microcosm of the professional world, with participants embodying the roles of data scientists, business strategists, and software developers. Mentors from DOMO and Layton Construction provide help and support, offering insights and encouragement.

After an intense and sleep-deprived judging session, the winners of the 2023 Hackathon were announced. Undergrad Team 4 (Yeonjae Kim, Hyejun Park, Jonathan Liles) and Graduate Team 2 (Saurabh Dhaigude, Shreeya Maskey, Shankar Mhamane) emerged victorious, their solution not just a testament to their technical prowess but also their deep understanding of business problem. Their innovative approach set them apart, showcasing the potential of the next generation to tackle the business challenges of the future.
