Five ways to unwind and recharge over winter break

Winter break is almost here! As a way to celebrate the end of an eventful fall semester, here are five activities to help you unwind, recharge, and make the most of your well-deserved break. Utah offers everything from world-class skiing to cozy outdoor activities, making it the perfect place to create a memorable winter break.

1. Hit the slopes in Park City

Park City is home to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the country. Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort offer something for every skill level, from beginner bunny slopes to challenging black diamonds. Even if you’re not a skier, Park City’s charming Main Street is worth the trip. Browse local businesses, grab lunch at a cozy restaurant, and enjoy the alpine atmosphere.

2. Experience the magic of Luminaria

Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point offers a peaceful escape during winter break. This walk-through light display transforms Ashton Gardens into a glowing winter landscape, with illuminated pathways, creative light installations, and warm fire pits scattered throughout. You can enjoy hot chocolate, take photos with friends, and enjoy the wintery experience.

3. Go tubing at Soldier Hollow

For winter fun without the learning curve, tubing at Soldier Hollow is the way to go! The Nordic Skiing venue, that hosted events during the 2002 Olympics, now features several lanes and fast runs, making it a fun adrenaline-filled option for students.

4. Swimming in the Homestead Crater

Here’s an activity that you won’t find anywhere else: swimming in a 95-degree natural hot spring inside a 65-foot crater. The Homestead Crater in Midway offers a surreal winter experience where you can swim, soak, and snorkel in the warm mineral waters. It’s the perfect way to blow off steam and relax after a busy semester of lectures and study sessions.

5. Ice skating at Gallivan Center

Right in the heart of Downtown Salt Lake City, the Gallivan Center’s outdoor ice rink is a go to winter break outing. The rates are affordable, the lights feel cozy at night, and it’s a great spot to skate whether you’re experienced or new to the rink. It offers a refreshing change of pace and a chance to enjoy downtown SLC!
