Best Study Spots for Finals

Finals week hits differently. Suddenly, everywhere is packed, your usual “secret spot” isn’t so secret anymore, and caffeine becomes your personality. Whether you’re cramming for exams or finishing that last paper, finding the right study environment can make all the difference. Here are some of the best places, both on and off campus, to lock in and get it done.

On-Campus Favorites
  • J. Willard Marriott Library. Let’s be real: the heart of finals week is the library. It’s the go-to for a reason. The library has everything: from completely silent floors to more collaborative spaces on the other levels. If you need focus, go downstairs. If you’re working with friends, the Main Floor (3rd floor) is perfect. You can even reserve private study rooms for up to a few hours, which is a lifesaver for group projects or Zoom calls.  Reserving rooms in advance at any location will give you some peace of mind during finals week!
  • Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building (SFEBB). Another underrated gem is our very own SFEBB. It’s modern, clean, and honestly feels more like a professional workspace than a campus building. The natural lighting and quiet corners make it ideal for long study sessions, plus, it’s a great way to romanticize your future corporate life a little.  You’ll find study spaces on the north and south ends of nearly every floor, plus additional spots on the 3rd and 5th floors—including outdoor patio space. Reserve your spot at the front desk or text them at (801) 581-7676 with your name, major, and reservation details.
  • A. Ray Olpin Student Union. If you’re someone who studies better with a bit of background noise, try the Union. It’s more social, but during finals, you’ll still find plenty of focused students. Grab a table, headphones, and a snack, and you’ll be set for hours.
  • Lassonde Studios. One place you definitely shouldn’t overlook is Lassonde. It’s one of the most unique study environments on campus: open, creative, and full of energy. Whether you’re posted up on one of the couches, working at a table, or grabbing a drink from the in-house café, it’s a great mix of productivity and inspiration. Plus, it’s open late, which makes it ideal for those last-minute study nights. Many students love it because it balances comfort with a motivating atmosphere, making it easier to stay focused for longer stretches.
  • Kahlert Village. One of the best parts about Kahlert Village is the breakout rooms. Much like SFEBB, many screens are great for both individual and group use. Find them on the first floor and more in the Creative Commons by Adobe.
Off-Campus Study Spots

Sometimes, you just need to escape campus. That’s where off-campus spots come in.

  • Coffee shops. Coffee shops are a classic finals-week move, and The Rose Establishment is a favorite. It has a calm, aesthetically pleasing vibe that somehow makes studying feel less painful. If you want something a little closer to campus, Alchemy Coffee is another great option: quiet, cozy, and perfect for deep focus. For a more spacious environment, try Publik Coffee Roasters. It’s great if you need to spread out your notes or stay for long stretches without feeling cramped.
  • Salt Lake City Public Library. And if coffee shops get too distracting, the Salt Lake City Public Library is a good alternative. It offers a quieter, more structured environment, basically a change of scenery without losing that productive library energy.

You’re Almost There! At the end of the day, the “best” study spot really depends on your vibe. Some days you’ll need complete silence; other days you’ll want the hum of people around you. Finals week is stressful, but finding a place where you feel comfortable and focused can make it a lot more manageable.

So, switch it up, explore a few spots, and find your rhythm. You’ve made it this far! Just one more push!
