This course will address why equity, diversity, and inclusion are closely linked to the challenge of work-life integration. Students who complete this course will gain a better understanding of US family demographics and the complexities of care-giving. They will learn how employers can play a pivotal role in their employees ability to pursue their desired family life trajectories. A special emphasis will be placed on the harmful impact of assumptions regarding gender and sexuality, and the US policy context in comparative perspective. Students will leave the course with ideas how work-family polices and work-life integration measure can be a part of their organization’s commitment to justice, equity, and diversity.

Claudia Geist, Ph.D.
Dr. Claudia Geist (she/her/hers) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Division of Gender Studies. She completed her undergraduate education in Germany and received her Ph.D. from Indiana University. Her research focuses on gender, family, and inequality. Dr. Geist uses primarily quantitative research in her work and is committed to improving how surveys measure gender and sexuality. She has published on the domestic division of labor, co-authored a book on family definitions, and is currently engaged in research on pregnancy intentions with colleagues from the University of Utah Health Division of Family Planning.
