The Professional MBA program can be completed in as little as 24 months with fall (August) and spring (January) start options. When completed at a normal pace, the program is six semesters total with classes held year-round. Students typically take two classes at a time with core classes weekly in person and online.

Class Schedule

Core classes for students starting in the fall will be held Tuesdays (in person) and Thursdays (online).

Courses

The University of Utah Professional MBA program believes in the power of knowledge to transform your career. Our core curriculum lays a strong foundation for every business discipline. Elective courses expand on this foundation and allow you to design your path of study.

Core Courses

The program consists of 30 hours of core coursework. Core classes satisfy the prerequisites for all Professional MBA electives.

1.5 credit hours
  • Explore the underlying concepts and various techniques necessary for effective communication in today’s every-changing workplace
  • Learn both communication theory and the practical application of communication excellence
  • Understand managerial communication on three levels: interpersonal/supportive communication, advanced public speaking, and managerial writing

3.0 credit hours

  • Evaluate the industry environment and learn strategies to leverage a firm’s competitive advantage by utilizing it’s core skills and capabilities
  • Gain an understanding of industry dynamics and identify valuable skills, resources, capabilities, technology strategy, and trade-offs among various business-level strategies
  • Gain an understanding of corporate strategy, vertical integration, diversification, and globalization strategies

1.5 credit hours

  • Enhance productivity and proficiency in Excel for business application
  • Understand how Excel features and tools (e.g., pivot tables) can be used in business data analysis
  • Use Analysis ToolPak in Excel and interpret the outputs for business application

3.0 credit hours

  • Learn the language of business public enterprises use to communicate their economic transactions to external decision-makers, such as stock investors or creditors
  • Read, analyze, and understand U.S. financial statements, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or statements prepared under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
  • Understand financial reporting regulations and which regulatory and enforcement institutions are involved in the process of preparing and reporting corporate financial information

3.0 credit hours

  • Gain an understanding of financial analysis, planning, working capital management, financial math, valuation, and capital budgeting

1.5 credit hours

  • Gain fundamental knowledge in information technology, established and emerging, and its exciting business applications
  • Learn about key issues surrounding the investment, evaluation, use, and management of information technology
  • Analyze best practices of information technology utilization, implementation, or management in different sectors

  • Enhance conceptual understanding of optimal management strategies in leading high-performing teams
  • Develop skills requires to implement management strategies
  • Form teams within your class and create team Working Agreements that will guide team processes throughout the program

  • Develop an understanding of the data accumulation and allocation processes and illustrate the proper application of accounting data in solving managerial problems
  • Gain exposure to strategic implications and limitations of accounting systems and data
  • Gain skills in cost estimation, pricing and product mix decision, activity-based costing, and measuring opportunity costs for decision-making
  • Understand firm internal accounting systems and how they integrate with managers’ challenges in finance, accounting, marketing, operations management, and human resources

  • Learn fundamental principles of economics from a managerial perspective
  • Gain an understanding of market supply and demand, production and cost analysis, consumer theory, marketing structure analysis, banking systems, and macroeconomics

  • Learn marketing management and strategy concepts as well as their implementation and control
  • Apply these concepts to marketing decisions through case analyses and simulations
  • Understand market assessment, segmentation, target marketing, positioning, differentiation, branding, budgeting, customer lifetime value analysis, product pricing, distribution, and promotional strategies

3.0 credit hours

  • Learn human behavior concepts and principles needed to create high-performance workplaces
  • Enhance personal leadership effectiveness through self-assessment, feedback, and studying practices from exemplary leaders
  • Discuss topics like motivation, power and influence, group behavior and teams, decision-making, conflict and collaboration, organization design, culture, and leading change

3.0 credit hours

  • Understand the process by which any firm (such as a hospital) transforms raw materials (e.g., sick patients) into finished goods (e.g., cured patients)
  • Develop a framework for analyzing business process flows within and across firms
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of the management of supply chains, capacity, inventory, quality, and product design

To lead in today’s business climate, you must understand the nuances of foreign business dynamics and culture. For those interested in gaining a global perspective, the PMBA program offers an optional international trip elective that gives students a knowledge and understanding of the international business environment. This venture into global corporate affairs provides students the opportunity to experience firsthand how business is conducted abroad.

The first section of the course will include in-class lectures and activities meant to expose you to current issues in international business and the country you are visiting.

Specialization Opportunities

Currently, there are five available graduate certificate options, a dual degree, and five concurrent degrees available to individuals planning on specializing. These certifications can be earned in addition to your MBA by focusing electives on certain areas. Other requirements vary by program.

Graduate Certificates

The Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics (GCBA) allows students to gain specialized knowledge in both data analytics and management. Obtaining a graduate-level analytics certificate will significantly benefit those seeking to advance their careers in the rapidly growing market for data and analytics professionals.

The Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Management (GCCM) is a 15 credit hour program focused on the foundations of cybersecurity leadership. Participants will be taught to plan, implement, and operate a security program intended to reduce risk of compromised data. Certificate graduates be equipped to aid in the operation and monitoring of security systems used to protect corporate and consumer data. In an age of ever-increasing aggression and sophistication, the ability to protect key data is poised to be a valuable career asset.

The Graduate Certificate in Information Systems (GCIS) allows you to gain a broad background in information systems and more specialized technical knowledge. Some of the available courses include data mining, business intelligence and analytics, software and systems architecture, product and process management, and IT security. Obtaining a graduate-level certificate in IS will provide you with a significant advantage to advance your career in the field of information systems or strengthen your technical proficiency. This 15-credit hour certificate program is designed for maximum flexibility and offers you a wide choice of courses and areas of concentration.

The Graduate Certificate in Operations and Supply Chain Management is a 15 credit hour program that teaches students how firms create and capture value. Students will learn how to maximize quality relative to cost and optimize activities across that supply chain. Students will study the importance of lowering production costs and managing process flows. The course will explore strategic choices for different industries and operational objectives. Students will learn how to manage inventory effectively use information systems with their supply chains.  Students will gain practice in presenting operational results to management and/or other operations personnel.

The Graduate Certificate in Real Estate (GCRE) is a 15 credit hour program that equips students with advanced skills in real estate development. Due to the robust real estate climate in the Mountain West (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming), one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions, there is a significant need for developers.

Dual and Concurrent Degree Programs

For most of our dual and concurrent degree options, you can graduate with two master’s degrees by only adding two semesters to your education. Earning a second master’s degree with your MBA is the most efficient and cost-effective way to impact your career potential exponentially.

Designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, this part-time option prepares students for administrative positions in hospitals, large clinics, extended-care facilities, clinical and reference laboratories, as well as for positions in health care consulting and with vendors such as those providing information technology to health care organizations. The purpose of the dual-degree program is to prepare students for success in the health care and medical industries by providing essential business knowledge, skills, and industry-specific knowledge.

Students who are interested in earning an MBA and an MSF degree can save time and money by completing both degrees concurrently. This requires a combined total of 60 credits and allows students to graduate two semesters sooner than if they had taken each program separately. To graduate in the expected timeframe, students should expect to take up to three courses at a time during some semesters.

The MBA financial management course satisfies an MSF pre-requisite. We recommend you wait until you have completed this course and have a posted grade before applying to the program.
