Lean Manufacturing is a method designed to eliminate waste and optimize processes. It is based on decades of research and development in the manufacturing space. Although its roots can be loosely traced back to ancient assembly lines and directly traced to the Ford Motor Company, engineers at Toyota developed the heart of modern Lean Methodology in the 1950s and 60s. They pioneered important ideas about reducing waste, cutting costs, increasing speed, and improving customer satisfaction. These key concepts were later coined Lean Manufacturing by authors James P. Womack, Daniel Roos, and Daniel T. Jones.

Lean thinking can benefit a wide-variety of industries and organizations.  Although many of the core concepts behind modern Lean methodologies were forged in the manufacturing sector, the ideas have proven to have universal value. The key philosophy is process improvement; If you have processes that can be improved Lean principals can likely benefit you.

A lean enterprise is an organization that applies lean methodologies across the entire value stream, not just individual processes. In other words, they utilize lean thinking to expand the benefits of lean manufacturing to the processes and goals of an entire organization. This big-picture approach focuses on what is adding value to the customer and streamlining operations. This holistic, cross-functional model has proven useful in all types of organizations, resulting in increased speed of delivery, improved quality, reduced costs, and the agility required to react to market changes.

Implementing this method goes beyond best practices; Creating a Lean Enterprise requires a paradigm shift in the way we think about and manage operations. During this course, you will shift your focus from managing separate processes, technologies, departments, and assets to optimizing the flow of materials, products, or services and information through the entire value stream. Whether you are working in a specific department or orchestrating organizational change, this course will help you develop an invaluable understanding of holistic operations and optimization.
