At the Goff Strategic Leadership Center, we believe that our strategic principle of identifying and aligning resources to generate value isn’t just about the organizations in which we work. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our latest initiative: Ask Goff. It’s an informal, yet powerful way to seek support, gain perspective, and connect with a community of individuals who are genuinely invested in your success.
Navigating the Performance Review
Our inaugural Ask Goff question comes from a professional looking to navigate a crucial juncture: a performance review and a discussion with a supervisor about their future goals over the next 3-5 years. The question, though common, carries significant weight as it can shape one’s trajectory within an organization.
Insights from our Friends of Goff
Anne Olsen, Community Manager, The Shop
Tragically, you won’t be able to thrift a functioning crystal ball anytime soon – so, you’ve got to just find a way to dig deep and dream big.
Does the thought of holding the role of your current boss excite you? Would you rather jump to a different department and learn something new? The answers to both are valid answers to the broader question.
Plus, the most fun part of the whole exercise is looking back 3-5 years from now and seeing just how wrong you were. 😂
Bethany Crowell, Director of Business Intelligence, Data & Software Solutions Group
My suggestions include:
- Identify a few skills that you hope to have mastered (or have in progress). This demonstrates your ambition to succeed in the role and beyond.
- Give an example of something you hope to have accomplished that contributes to the mission and/or advances the organization. Then discuss how you plan to expand on that after reaching the 3-5 year mark.
Jeff Letsinger, Sr. Product Manager at Kantana
A couple of questions come to mind for me when thinking about 3-5 years out.
- Do you have a desire to manage people or be a contributor?
- What do you want to accomplish in your personal life that may impact your professional career?
My advice on approach:
- Be honest with yourself (and your boss). Good employers know the reality that young professionals are not going to stay at the same company forever so the best bosses have your best interest in mind and will often want to help you achieve your long term goals.
Maya Jolley, Associate Director, Goff Strategic Leadership Center
As someone who has asked similar questions of students, I’d consider…
- What about the job have you enjoyed so far?
- Where do you need more support?
- Where do you want to grow/how can they provide you opportunities for your to do so? Be specific!
- Share your interest in staying & growing with the company.
Overall: be honest! And ambitious.
