Admission Requirements

The quality of our student body speaks volumes about the quality of our MBA Online program. At the David Eccles School of Business, we’re looking for accomplished, early to mid-career professionals with proven potential for leadership and a strong desire to advance in their careers. Most of our students enter the program looking for broad business skills, and many come with interests in entrepreneurship, finance, operations, human resources, or general management.

We require at least one year of post-undergraduate work experience. We also ask that you remain employed in a full-time job throughout the program. Exceptions may apply based on your background and current situation; please schedule a 1:1 meeting to learn more.

Applicants must have a four-year bachelor’s degree with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher from an accredited college or university. Applicants with undergraduate GPAs below 3.0 may appeal this requirement with an acceptable GMAT/GRE score or previous successful completion of a graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

We require both unofficial and official college transcripts from all institutions where you received college credit, including any concurrent enrollment. Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded to your online application. Official transcripts need to be sent directly to the University’s Office of Graduate Admissions. They can be emailed to AdmissTranscripts@SA.Utah.edu or mailed to the Graduate Admissions Office:

University of Utah Graduate Admissions
201 S. 1460 E. Room 250 S
Salt Lake City, UT 84112

Note: University of Utah graduates do not need to request official transcripts.

We require two letters of recommendations from individuals who are well acquainted with your performance in a work setting, preferably from a current or former supervisor.

The title or position of the recommender is not as important as the person’s ability to comment knowledgeably and specifically about you. Submit recommendations from people who can speak directly about your aptitudes and capabilities.

Please write a one-page essay addressing the following topics:

  • Your motivation for applying
  • Why you are a strong candidate
  • How earning an MBA will influence your career

The essay should be single-spaced, typed, and may not exceed one page. We do not require a specific format, but we ask that you avoid bullet points. This is your writing sample.

A second, optional essay may be submitted to provide insight into any piece of the application that requires further explanation or clarification. Applicants with a GPA below a 3.0 should complete this explanatory essay.

The resume should show the progression of your career and how you are a contributor in your role. To do this, please provide a detailed chronological career history with dates, employers, nature of your duties, responsibilities, and other pertinent information.

Your resume should also show education and additional certifications or licenses.

We also recommend listing any international travel relating to school, work, or place of residence. Please do not include vacation destinations.

There is an application fee to be paid when you submit your application. When you are ready to submit your application, you will be directed through a payment process. The application fee may be paid via credit card or check. Please note that if you choose to pay by check, your application will not be reviewed until the payment is received.

Once we receive your completed application, you will be contacted to set up an interview. Interviews may be conducted in person or via video conference.

The interview will help us assess your skills, your motivation, and your character. It is an opportunity for us to get to know you as a candidate and an opportunity for you to give a voice to the application materials that will go to the MBA Online admissions committee. We will clarify any concerns and get a sense of where you started, where you are now, and where you are going in your career. Admissions decisions will be received within 1-2 weeks of your interview.

Testing is Optional

A GMAT test score is not required to complete the application process. In some cases, the admissions committee may ask that you take the GMAT after review of your transcripts. We will only make this request, in very specific circumstances. If you do not have a bachelors degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, we highly recommend you speak with admissions advisor.

We recommend anyone who already has test scores to submit them with their application. We do not have a minimum score requirement and have admitted students with a wide range of scores.

Score Submission

Upon completion of the GMAT, you can request for your score to be sent to up to five schools; simply include the University of Utah MBA Online program on that list when you first take the test. If you previously took the GMAT and did not request the testing service to send your score to us at that time, you must contact them and ask for a duplicate copy to be sent.

Because there is a delay between your test date and the time we would receive your official score, you can send us a copy of the unofficial score report that you receive the day you take the test. It can be scanned and emailed to us at MBAOnline@Utah.edu.

English Proficiency

International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by providing one of the following:

  • TOEFL score of 80 iBT or higher
    – The University of Utah no longer accepts TOEFL paper-based test scores
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or higher
    – The University of Utah will only accept IELTS exam scores completed in person.
  • Duolingo score of 105 or higher

Additional information about English proficiency, score submissions, and exemptions can be found on the University of Utah Admissions Office website.

International Undergraduate Degrees & Transcripts

International degrees must be issued by an accredited university. Cumulative GPA of degrees must meet the requirement of 3.0 or higher after conversion to the 4.0 scale. When applying with non-English undergraduate transcripts, please upload an original copy of your transcript as well as a translated version.

GRE Note

We do not accept the GRE® General Test at-home exam.

Visa Sponsorship

The MBA Online program cannot provide a visa sponsorship and will not issue an I-20 for international students seeking to study in the United States.

If you are seeking a visa sponsorship please explore our Full-Time MBA program instead and consider attending an International Ask Us Anything Session. In these sessions, Full-Time MBA admissions specialists answer questions and share key information for international applicants.
