Program Highlights

Cybercrime is on the rise, whether it be the compromise of information systems, employees leaking sensitive data, global organized crime creating large-scale fraud, or nation-states and other actors disseminating disinformation in an effort to destabilize governments. Never before has the threat landscape been so diverse, sophisticated, and aggressive.

Cybersecurity is a management problem, as security controls must be implemented in every department or business unit in an organization. The security risks posed by people, and inherent in processes and technology must all be managed: with controls in policies and procedures as well as technological responses. Cybersecurity management requires leaders with strong technical skills, exceptional business communication, and expertise in risk management.

For this reason, the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah is uniquely positioned to teach both technical and leadership skills to students looking to enter this new and rapidly changing field. Our graduates will be positioned to obtain excellent employment positions and have longer-term career advancement opportunities.

Business Career Services

The David Eccles School of Business offers professional career management services and an MSCM senior career coach to provide students with guidance on all aspects of building a great career. Students have access to recruiting events, an exclusive jobs database, and one-on-one consultations with their career coach, in addition to a career development course. These resources have yielded powerful results for MSCM graduates.

MSCM Capstone

MSCM students complete a capstone project as the culmination of their degree. This project is an opportunity for students to put their classroom knowledge to work by preparing for and achieving an approved cybersecurity or IT certification to demonstrate skills that complement their education. Completed over two to three semesters, the capstone is worth three credit hours.

STEM Designated Program

The MSCM degree is a STEM program, and international students starting holding an F-1 visa are eligible for up to 36 months of post-graduation OPT. Students can utilize the MSCM career coach to find and secure employment, and work in the U.S. for up to three years after completing the program. With a high demand for jobs both in Utah and in the U.S., F-1 graduates are well-equipped to start their careers immediately after graduation.

Work-Compatible Schedule

To accommodate working professionals, most MSCM courses are held in the evenings starting at 6 p.m. Students also have the option to earn their MSCM degree 100% online or enroll in a mix of in-person and online classes each semester.

Full-Time, Part-Time, and Online Options

Students can pursue the MSCM program in either a full-time or part-time format, on-campus or 100% online. Full-time students beginning in the fall or spring complete the program in three semesters (12 months), and part-time students complete the program in four or more semesters (16+ months). All MSCM students are able to adjust their course load semester-by-semester.

The MSCM program offers students an opportunity to build a professional network with fellow students. Students come to us with professional work experience from a variety of roles and industry sectors.
