Timing:  We bought toward the lower end of the six month range.
Reason:  Canadian National Railway has been very efficient at moving freight and has been steadily increasing its market share. The company has been expanding its investment in intermodal transportation with several recent acquisitions. Rail transport is extremely efficient and inexpensive, but lacks the flexibility of freight moved by truck. With intermodal hubs, CNI can offer attractive prices and convenient transport. CNI has recently built strong links with CSX making it easy to move freight between Canada and the US. CNI moves less coal than many of its competitors, which is attractive given the steadily decreasing demand for coal. CNI passes on about 85% of fuel costs to customers, reducing exposure to oil prices. We expect that CNI will perform well in a recession.
