As a Sikh student in the U.S., I face challenges related to identity and cultural awareness. Sikhism is often misunderstood, particularly when people misidentify my turban. This issue extends beyond the U.S., as Sikhism, one of the youngest religions, is not widely known. However, I believe education can bridge these gaps. My aim is to share my experience as a Sikh student and promote awareness about our beliefs, including the five articles of faith, such as the turban, which symbolizes equality, humility, and service.

Pursuing my Master of Science in Finance at the University of Utah has been a life-changing experience. The program has deepened my knowledge in investment management, corporate finance, and accounting, while the diverse and inclusive campus has supported my growth. The exposure to a global community has broadened my understanding of how finance intersects with global markets. I hope to inspire other students to embrace their identities, recognizing that our diverse backgrounds enrich the learning environment.

Advice to my peers: As an Indian student, I recommend visiting the Hindu Temples & Gurudwara in Salt Lake City. Meeting people from your culture can provide valuable insights into how others have navigated their journey here. It’s a great way to gain support, and feel welcomed. The sense of community you find can really help you adjust and feel more at home in a new environment.
