International Applicants

You Are Welcome Here!

Application and Admissions

No, we do not offer conditional admission. All required exams must be taken before we will issue an admission decision.

The University of Utah requires 4 years of college/university coursework as a minimum requirement for admission into a graduate program. Most students who earned a 3-year bachelor’s degree are required to complete additional college coursework to fulfill this requirement. For details on this policy and specific information about your situation, please contact the International Admissions Office at IAO@SA.Utah.edu or 801-581-8761.

After you submit your application, international admissions officers will evaluate your transcripts and convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale. This GPA conversion will be done once you have submitted your application (including copies of your unofficial transcripts) and paid the application fee.

Our office does not conduct pre-evaluations for applicants.

If possible, please upload your financial documents with your application. Otherwise, we will require your financial statement at the time of admission.

Please refer to the MRED tuition page to find non-resident tuition rates.

International students are required to attend the program full-time, which is considered 9 credit hours or more per semester.

TOEFL/IELTS

Applicants whose first language is not English, including permanent residents who have had their PR card for less than 5 years, are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score for consideration. Find information about TOEFL/IELTS waivers.

The MRED program requires a minimum TOEFL score of 90 or IELTS score of 6.5 for admission. Please note that our minimum standard is higher than the general University of Utah English proficiency requirement. If your score does not meet our minimum requirement, we recommend you retake the exam to achieve a higher score.

You will receive an email notification when your official TOEFL/IELTS score is received and added to your application. You can also check the status through your application portal.

TOEFL/IELTS scores can take up to 4 weeks to reach our office. Please take this into account when scheduling your exam date. If it has been 4 weeks since you took the exam and your score is still not showing in your application portal, you may contact our office to request help in locating your score.

Our TOEFL code is 4853 for the University of Utah. Report your TOEFL score.

Applicants taking the IELTS exam can select the University of Utah during or after testing to have their score submitted electronically. Report your IELTS score.

TOEFL/IETLS scores can take up to 4 weeks to reach our office. We cannot process your application and make an admissions decision without your officially reported English proficiency exam score, so please take application deadlines into account when scheduling your exam date.

International students who have graduated from university or college in the United States often qualify for a TOEFL/IETLS waiver. To qualify for a waiver, you must either have continuously remained in the United States since graduation or, if you have left the United States, you must have graduated no more than 2 years ago. Find information about TOEFL/IELTS waivers.

Yes, we encourage applicants to submit their application as soon as they can. However, you will be required to include your scheduled exam date on your application. Please note that we cannot make an admissions decision until we have received your official TOEFL/IELTS score as reported by the test administrator, so please take this into account when scheduling your test date. Official test scores should be reported to the University of Utah no later than the application deadline.
