Fall Semester 2020 is going to be different from what we might have imagined. The Eccles School is dedicated to providing an incredible learning experience and to offering opportunities to build lifelong friendships, grow professional networks, and ensure your success this school year.

We know you have questions, and we have lots of answers below. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for, reach out via chat, and we’ll help you out. We also know that while we’re all in the same storm, we’re not all in the same boat. Classes

We will start on Monday, Aug. 24 as planned.

See a complete calendar at registrar.utah.edu/academic-calendars/. A few items to note:

  • School begins Monday, Aug. 24
  • The week of Sept. 28-Oct. 2 will be held all online, acting as a circuit breaker to limit the spread of COVID-19.
  • Fall Break (originally scheduled for Oct. 4-11) will be canceled and classes will continue. If the U.S. Vice Presidential Debate ends up taking place on campus during that week, classes will be moved online for that week as well as for the previous week.
  • In-person classroom instruction will finish by Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, and will shift online for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 3.
  • Final exams will take place online the week of Dec. 7-11.

The University has made the decision that in-person classes will take place this fall. However, if the situation were to worsen, the University would react and potentially change the mode of instruction to ensure the safety of University students, faculty, and staff.

The Eccles School offers several online courses during typical semesters and those are listed on the class schedule for Fall Semester. Many classes will be hybrid for Fall Semester.

It is a class that will be taught partially in-person and partially online to allow for the following of social distancing rules designed to keep students safe while providing an on-campus experience.

We are anticipating that if a class is hybrid, you may have the opportunity to opt-in to just taking the class online synchronously, which means the online class would meet at a specific time and require your attendance just as an in-person course does.

When you register for a class, you can see if it is online or hybrid in class attributes.

The Eccles School has decided that there will be a consistent rule throughout all classes that will be followed as to which day students will attend in person. This information will be available to view within your class syllabus.

Generally, these are the guidelines that will be followed:

  • Students with an odd birth month (January, March, May, July, September, and November) attend MW classes on Mondays, and TTh classes on Tuesdays
  • Students with an even birth month (February, April, June, August, October, and December) attend MW classes on Wednesdays, and TTh classes on Thursdays

Not everything will necessarily be available to complete online. Reach out to your academic advisor to talk through if your classes could be taken remotely or find options on ways to switch up your schedule.

If you go to the Class Schedule, you will be able to very clearly see the type of class you have signed up for. The options are: In-Person, Hybrid, IVC, or Online. The type of class is listed separately from the class location.

The way you start a class is the way you will finish a class. However, every in-person class will have flexibility in that if you are unable to make it to campus due to extenuating circumstances, you can still participate.

We recommend finding classes on the schedule which are smaller than about 30 people as they can be placed into rooms socially distanced with fewer issues. Larger classes most likely will require a hybrid approach, which will be online for at least some of the class.

Finals will not be given on campus. However, it is up to the professor if the final will be an actual test or an assignment to be turned in via Canvas or other online option.

In response to the growing COVID-19 pandemic, University of Utah computing labs will be open in strategic locations around campus to provide internet service to students with limited access. Please visit coronavirus.utah.edu/#students for the most current information on which labs are open.

The Office for Student Engagement & Assessment (SEA) has developed a NEW Eccles Online Learning Assistance Canvas course. This tool teaches you the ins and outs of Zoom, different types of classes ( as hybrid, IVC, etc.), and gives you tips & tricks and resources to maximize your Eccles Experience both inside and outside of the classroom. The federal government on July 14 rescinded its rule that international students had to take on-campus classes to stay in legal status. Please read this announcement on the International Student & Scholars Services for more information.

The normal areas where students may sit or congregate in groups will not be available, however, there will be socially distanced chairs and tables available for individual students. Outside, when weather permits, the Eccles School will set up tents for students to utilize for studying or waiting for their next class.

You will not be penalized for your inability to complete this requirement due to the pandemic. We will make sure to provide other opportunities to meet this requirement.

No, you only need to complete one orientation. If you are registered as a Pre-Business student, the University sends your uID to the Eccles School, and we enroll you in the Eccles NSO Canvas Page where your Orientation information can be found.

Classes are not always taught every semester. You can reach out to the department of the class you were looking to take to see specifics about that class.

Yes, they are two separate orientations. The Business Scholars orientation will be held in person in different shifts the Friday before classes start. Watch your email for more details.

The University of Utah has extended current travel restrictions for all university-related business travel for faculty, staff, and students through September 1, 2020. For more information, visit coronavirus.utah.edu/#students.

Eccles Global trips are not scheduled for Fall Semester, but are planned for Spring Semester. For more information, visit eccles.utah.edu/students/global/.

Student Services

Academic Advising will be on-campus for quick questions and help scheduling an appointment. Appointments with your academic advisors will continue to be held online. More information at Eccles.link/advising.

Yes! Yes. On Friday, August 14, 2020, BLinc and the Office of Student Engagement & Assessment hosted a virtual Eccles Welcome for all incoming and returning undergraduate students. Yes. Coffee and other beverages and “grab and go” food items are available at both Lund Commons in CRCC and Blockchain Cafe in GARFF. For updated hours, visit eccles.utah.edu/building-cafe-hours/.

Health & Safety

ONLY COME TO CAMPUS IF YOU ARE HEALTHY

  • You have had no fever for at least 72 hours (that is three full days of no fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers), AND
  • You do not have any other flu-like symptoms (for example, cough or shortness of breath), AND
  • At least 7 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared, AND
  • You have not had contact with anyone who is COVID positive (including the 5 days before they were positive) for 14 days.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING (6 FT) MUST BE MAINTAINED

  • Maintain at least 6 ft of separation as often as possible. If this is not possible, face coverings must be worn.
  • Minimize face-to-face contacts and avoid large gatherings.
  • In person interactions should be limited to less than 50 people, while maintaining 6 ft separation at all times.

USE OF FACE COVERINGS ON CAMPUS IS EXPECTED

  • Face coverings (cloth masks, scarves, gaiters, bandanas) are expected, except in approved circumstances, in all common areas in campus buildings such as hallways, restrooms, lounge areas, classrooms, conference rooms, etc.
  • An online training course for students on Face Coverings and Physical Distancing will be available soon.

The University of Utah and the David Eccles School of Business are crafting safety protocols designed to keep everyone safe. Social distancing protocols will be followed in all public spaces, including classrooms, with six feet of distance maintained. Face coverings likely will be required in public spaces, including classrooms, and sanitation supplies will be provided to keep classrooms disinfected between class sessions.

Yes. The University of Utah has a Return to Campus Safely training available. Access that training here.

We currently have a stringent cleaning schedule, and students will be given the materials to disinfect their workspaces in classrooms.

Procedure plans are in progress for stairwells and bathrooms. However, it will be extremely important for students to take responsibility for following social distancing protocols as well.

The Eccles School will provide some masks. However, we are strongly recommending every student come to school with a face covering.

It is important to recognize that the primary purpose of wearing a face covering is to prevent the spread of the disease by those with the virus – they are not necessarily to protect you, but those around you and the environment.

We will have hand sanitizer and sanitized wipes so as students enter a classroom; they can wipe their workspace down to disinfect it.

All students, staff, and faculty will be required to complete a brief online public health and safety course prior to returning to campus and then engage in daily health monitoring.

We will not be doing testing of students before they arrive on campus, however, there are tests available for any student at the University’s health facilities.

This is not something that the academic side of the University can facilitate, but rather the health side. There will be tests available for students at the University’s health facilities.

New students are briefed about these practices during orientation. Returning students will be given information in many of the standard ways professors and the University communicate. For example, each syllabus will detail these types of practices.

Unless they are sitting in an office or study room by themselves, students and staff are required to wear masks when they are inside of a building. If a student does not wear a mask, it will be treated as a behavioral issue and referred to the Dean of Students office.

There will not be temperature checks as you are coming in or out of the business buildings, but there will be COVID-19 testing before move-in for on-campus housing.

Business Scholars

As of right now, we are fully planning on being on campus for fall semester. We are not deferring students due to COVID-19. We only offer deferments for military, church, and humanitarian service.

If a student chooses to not come in the fall (and hasn’t deferred for military, church, or humanitarian service), they would have to re-apply.

Scholarships are not guaranteed at the time of their re-application. They would be subject to whatever scholarships they qualify for and we have available at that time. In addition, if a student, post-high school, studies and earns credit from any other collegiate institution, they have to re-apply to the University of Utah as a transfer student and supply those transcripts. Scholarships for transfer students are significantly less than for incoming freshmen.

We are rearranging our schedule in hopes to have the best possible chance of traveling. We have flipped the schedule so that most of our travel will be later in the academic year. The program fees do cover more than just the travel component of the program. In the event that we are unable to travel, we will review the situation and students for refunds. This will include components such as: what events have already taken place, if we can travel in the future, if the student had a scholarship that covered the fee, and anything else that needs to be taken into consideration.

This is a very common occurrence. We have specific scholarships and donors solely for the business school so we actually have our own Scholarship Office that records, processes and reports all scholarships to the main Financial Aid Office. All incoming student scholarships are assigned and awarded after the enrollment deadline for the university (as most of our students are determined at that time) all scholarships are assigned to specific donor funds and then sent over some time in the summer, usually June or July.

Your scholarship is well accounted for and will show on your account in the near future (if not in June or July, definitely before your first bill posting). If you do not see your scholarship by August 10th, please let us know, but rest assured we keep close track of scholarships as we want to ensure all of our students get the best package possible!

We have canceled the Business Scholars Transfer Program for Fall Semester but we will continue Spring 2021.

Yes, the Business Scholars program is facilitating a parent orientation. It will be held on Thursday, August 20 at 4 p.m. MT. This will be attended virtually.

Campus Life

Campus housing will follow social distancing standards designed to keep students safe. Housing & Residential Education (HRE) aligns with university leadership and local health officials’ plans for a safer on-campus residential experience. HRE intends to provide an on-campus living experience that supports students’ needs and abides by public health guidelines.

Student health and safety is our top priority. Campus residents are expected to follow guidance from local and federal health agencies. Examples include:

  • Increased cleaning and sanitization of high-touch areas in our buildings. Cleaning supplies and disinfectants will be available for use, but we encourage students to bring their own to clean their dorm rooms as well.
  • Dining areas may have modified seating arrangements or be limited to carry-out service only.
  • Students should engage in regular hand washing and other good hygiene habits

The Eccles School is committed to ensuring each student has a great freshman experience; however, this year’s freshman experience will ultimately look different under the pandemic. We are doing as much as we can to assist students in establishing connections with other students, faculty members, and mentors.

Yes. Please go to housing.utah.edu to apply for housing and to be placed onto a waitlist.

Housing is assigning different moving times to ensure that physical distancing rules are followed. These times will be communicated via email.

Students should bring their own thermometers for personal use. However, there are several clinics around the University that have medical resources.

The University has put out specific procedures for dining on its general Return to Campus website page.

Everyone who is currently approved to live on campus will be able to do so. However, the visitation guidelines within the dorms will become much stricter.

New student orientation is currently online. We will follow the State of Utah’s guidelines on the number of people allowed to gather. Anticipate that many of these events will take place with smaller groups or with multiple sessions.

On July 10, PAC-12 announced the football season, along with volleyball and soccer, will be limited to in-conference games only. Click here for more information from U Athletics.

We do not have any updates on what rush will look like, so we urge you to continue to watch https://returntocampus.utah.edu to see those updates when they come in.

Students are expected to wear masks and maintain social distancing of six feet. There will be expectations that students will be wearing masks and distancing six-feet. Click here for more information. 

TRAX is currently open. More information on safety measures can be found at www.rideutah.com.

There will be places for students to study, whether that be in the Library or SFEBB. Social distancing will be required, but specific protocols have not been released yet. 

We are planning Spring Semester as if everything will be back to normal, but will adjust as necessary.  

The Student Emergency fund application at the University of Utah is to help students apply for financial assistance to minimize an unforeseen financial barrier that arise in emergency situations. Find more information here.

If anyone is experiencing food insecurity the Feed U Pantry has food available to anyone with a UCard.

The Feed U Pantries are located in the A. Ray Olpin Union and Stensaas Lounge of EHSEB are open and stocked with fresh and shelf-stable food. In the Union, beautiful produce from the campus gardens is available, and in EHSEB, as part of our partnership with the U Hospital Nutrition Care Services, there are sandwiches, salads, pudding, and fruit cups; which are delivered daily!

They are open on weekdays but hours will vary based on volunteer availability. Current Hours can be found at feedu.utah.edu.
